goreme open air museum
Day 45: The Goreme open air museum, about fifteen minute’s walk from the centre of Goreme, was a collection of ancient (12th century) churches and monastic complexes dug into Goreme’s striking sandstone pinnacles.
Built at around the same time, the monastries of Meteora, Greece came to mind as we walked from spot to spot. I hope it is not unfair to conclude that Meteora was somewhat more impressive for the size, scale and precariousness of its constructions, together with the fact that the monastries are still working buildings.
The best of the churches was the so-called “Dark Church”, for which there was a small additional entrance fee, in which the frescos had been particularly well-preserved.
