our desert experience in jordan (wadi rum)

wadi rum nature reserve (view from lawrence house)Day 64: Our last full day in Jordan we took the minibus from Petra out to Wadi Rum, the protected desert area celebrated by Lawrence of Arabia, where we spent the day on a four wheel drive tour of the main sights.

wadi rum rock bridge (andrew for perspective)Within easy driving distance of Wadi Rum village we explored canyons, rock bridges and sand dunes.

wadi rum tea in the desertWhen in the desert, we do as the bedouins do. Lunch, in the heat of the day, was accompanied by several cups of very sweet tea prepared by our driver, and a two hour nap in the shade.

wadi rum desert jordan (andrew and kate)We finished the day with a beautiful desert sunset…

wadi rum campsite from sunset spot…and then stayed overnight at a desert campsite run by the local bedouin people, sleeping on a mattress under a clear desert sky and a fullish moon. Overnight the moon sank below the horizon and we had a glimpse of the northern hemisphere stars in all their glory.
