Day 100: It’s one of those places that words can’t describe.
I’ll always remember my first glimpse. Walking slowly through the southern archway, the full magnificence of the Taj Mahal came into view.
It’s a monument of great beauty but there is also melancholy here. The Taj is not a palace but a mausoleum. Built out of love in the 17th century by the emperor Shah Jahan to house the body of his wife, it also became his resting place.
As we walked around the building in the cool of the morning, we were awestruck by the sheer disproportionateness of it all.
While there can only ever be one first time, I hope that we’ll be able to come back here some day.
