temple of hephaestus, ancient agora, athens

Temple of Hephaestus, Ancient Agora, Athens, GreeceDay 14: On our second day in Athens we circled around to all the “lesser” archeological sites included with the cost of entry to the Acropolis. Of course, in any other city, these would be attractions of the first-order, but overshadowed by the Acropolis we found that most were only sparsely visited by tourists, even while the Acropolis was closed due to a strike. Highlight was the Temple of Hephaestus, a beautifully-preserved structure with 34 Doric columns built in the 5th century BC. We also dropped into the Keramikos cemetery, the Roman Agora and the Temple of Olympian Zeus, all of which were impressive in their own right.

Any walk through Athens is full of surprises. Amongst the worst facets of modern cities you find ancient gems in Athens… Sounds like you found plenty
