portside hania
Day 26: Hania was a pleasant port town, not unlike Nafplio, but a bit more run down and a possibly therefore a bit more “authentic”. We had a view from our room across the small port to the lighthouse which was lit up beautifully at night. The city has a Venetian character as it was ruled by them for about six centuries, and also a Turkish quarter
Crete is a popular island for Greek tourists and apparently is repsonsible for around one third of all tourism in Greece. Hania, as its most picturesque city of substance (easily nudging out Heraklion for this title) had a very sttong touristy feel, with all the accoutrements, including henna tattoos, holiday hair braiding, even an oppotunity to have a photo with a snake crawling on you.
That said, we enjoyed it a lot.
