it’s a dog’s life on santorini

santorini - it's a dog's lifeDay 22: Quite apart from its geological and aesthetic excesses, Santorini also won its way into our hearts for its animal inhabitants.

We’ve been to our fair share of destinations where the streets are roamed by scraggy, slightly crazy-looking and occasionally bitey dogs. Ubud, Bali springs to mind in this respect.

In Santorini, the dogs appeared well cared for and spent 75% of their time lying around looking adorable and 25% of the time meekly accepting affection from smitten visitors to the island.

I snapped this photo, at Kate’s suggestion, in the late afternoon in Oia. I love the way that the setting sun lights up the curved surface on which the dogs are sleeping, utterly oblivious to the dramatic backdrop.

There were cats too. We saw one (very well trained) moggy, mewing and parading in a demonstrative but incredibly cute fashion, inducing a family of four tourists to follow it right inside its owner’s jewellery shop, from which they did not emerge for some time!
