a very special children’s drawing exhibition
Day 27: While in Hania we dropped into the excellent Naval Museum, the upper floor of which is devoted to retelling the history of the Battle of Crete, in which Greek, British, Australian and New Zealand fought in an ultimately unsuccessful attempt to prevent the Nazis from gaining control of Hania and its airport.
The exhibition was worthwhile, however we were somewhat disturbed by the display of winning entries from a children’s drawing competition on the theme.
See how the children have realistically captured the conflict, showing local Cretans pitchforking the Nazi paratroopers as they land.
Detail from another entry colourfully depicts the locals gunning down the German invaders. Nice work, kids!
