windsor hotel, cairo
Days 74-77: What a grand old place this is. With an creaking elevator operated by an attendant, rooms that have not been updated since Winston Churchill’s time and an in-room telephone that connects only with reception, it was everything that we had hoped for in a central place to stay in Cairo.
When we asked to borrow an iron, we were delivered one that looked like it was manufactured in Britain in the fifties. They sure don’t make them like they used to.
If you like your hotels sterile and brightly lit, the Windsor isn’t the place for you. However, if it’s character you are looking for, you could not do better.
There is a magnificent restaurant and bar area which is faithful to the British Officers’ Club that the premises once were. The only concession to modernity was the wireless internet access which was usually available.
We would stay here again, in a heartbeat.
