stuck at the heathrow airport hilton

Airport Hilton HeathrowDay 2: It was always going to a stretch making the connection in Heathrow - our flight from Mumbai landed an hour before the departure of our connecting flight to Oslo. What killed us in the end was the queue to pass through the security check a second time. By the time we made it back to the depatures floor BA770 to Oslo had vanished from the boards.

Such are the viccissitudes of international travel.

So, with luggage stuck in “the system” and clutching our British Airways overnight comfort packs (white T-shirt, selection of basic toiletries) we took the 6 minutes walk over to the Heathrow Airport Hilton.

After a long flight from Mumbai, it was mercifully close. Heaven knows what timezone our bodies think we’re in.

While room 102 had an outlook onto the hotel’s vehicle arrival ramp, we weren’t there to do anything but sleep. There was no airplane noise to speak of, and dinner at the ubiquitous Brasserie was actually quite pleasant.

We’ve been rebooked onto the flight leaving at 07:55 and arriving Oslo at 11:00.

Andrew and the Airport Hilton billThe only thing painful about the Heathrow Airport Hilton was the bill for my 3 minute telephone call to dad back home to let Tim know of the changed arrangements. I expected to be charged through the nose but 24 quid came as a shock on the upside. I could have bought a phone for that much.

Andrew!

Cardinal rule of traveling: Never call from the hotel room. I have fond memories of trying to find a pay phone in New York during a winter storm.

I think I’ve got feeling back in my toes now.

Dear Andrew and Kate, Just as well Andrew, that you had had a number one haircut. From the look on your face, a fuller head of hair would have been standing on end at teh sight of the telephone bill.

Now you know how I felt when I was told that, yes, I could stay in Edinburgh (although it would be festival time). There is accommodation available, I was told, but the best price the University of Edinburgh can get for me is 2000 pounds a week. Since I would be there for about six weeks I calculated a rent bill of some $30,000 - so you can see I’m searching for some kind of cheap crofter’s cottage out in the highlands or a shepherd’s hut up a dead end glen, and I’m prepared to look after the sheep to boot!!

I hope Norway is more acceptable than London!!

Love, Dad

Hi Andrew & Kate, Neil just sent me your website’s address. It looks fantastic and we’re looking forward to following your adventures.

Say hi to Tiger Tim from Mia. And Zac says “digger” because that’s his favourite word and he says it to everyone he meets.

Happy trails…Dianne, Andrew, Mia & Zac
