dahab: fruit juice capital of the sinai peninsula?

penguin village restaurant dahab egyptDays 65-68: Dahab, on the east coast, of Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, was our first stop in Egypt, and it sure was a nice place to relax. Apart from our one evening of exertion, climbing nearby Mount Sinai, the rest of the time was largely spent sitting in our waterside restaurant drinking delicious fruit juices and smoothies and supremely good chocolate and coffee milkshakes, with occasional forays onto the main drag to find an ATM to withdraw more money for the fruit juices, smoothies, etc.

I finished reading Dave Eggers’ unique work of fact-fiction A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, and in a rare moment of physical activity, I grabbed a mask and fins and went snorkelling just off the rock ledge 30 metres from the shoreline and came across some surprising large fish swimming around the coral drop off. That’s about it.

We stayed at a hotel called the Penguin Village, which was inexpensive and perfectly reasonable, once we moved to the airconditioned room (was it hot in Dahab!). There was free wifi access at the restaurant. Some nice people did my laundry and organised minibus transfers to and from the places we needed to be. I liked it.

A Penguin Village… the memories. You didn’t go for a dive?

My friends and I also stayed at the Penguin Village in Dahab as you werethere. Not a bad place, prices and food were acceptable, especially if you like a cocktail of fruit juices. However, we feel that the best eatery was Jimmy’s “Funny Mummy” restaurant. Enjoy your travels.
